TAKING 100% RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR LIFE

“I don’t have enough time to work out.”

“My coach doesn’t like me so I don’t play that much.”

“My teacher is too hard, so I can’t get a good grade.”

“I would love to play on the #1 team but there are too many politics.”

These phrases have become all too familiar for me over the last ten years. I have heard every one of them from our athletes, multiple times.

It wasn’t until recently when I was reading, “Success Principles” by Jack Canfield that I decided to finally get around to doing a blog about it.

He literally has an entire chapter devoted to this crucial success principle. In one of his blog posts from 2012 he goes on to say:

If you want to be successful, you have to take 100% responsibility for everything that you experience in your life. This includes the level of your achievements, the results you produce, the quality of your relationships, the state of your health and physical fitness, your income, your debts, your feelings—everything! This is not easy.

In fact, most of us have been conditioned to blame something outside of ourselves for the parts of our life we don’t like. We blame our parents, our bosses, our friends, our co-workers, our clients, our spouse, the weather, the economy, our astrological chart, our lack of money—anyone or anything we can pin the blame on. We never want to look at where the real problem is—ourselves.

If you want to create the life of your dreams, then you are going to have to take 100% responsibility for your life as well. That means giving up all your excuses, all your victim stories, all the reason why you can’t and why you haven’t up until now, and all your blaming of outside circumstances. You have to give them all up forever.

This is such a liberating concept for our youth athletes who truly think about what this means.

YOU are in charge of your life, not someone else!!

YOU are in charge of whether or not you get a lot of playing time.

YOU are in charge of your grades.

YOU are in charge of setting up your schedule to make getting stronger, jumping higher, running faster,  and increasing your athletic performance a priority.

My whole career in this industry has basically been dedicated to steering kids away from the decisions I made and the injuries I incurred as a teenager and into my early twenties.

Looking back on my life I can definitely say that understanding this one simple yet life-changing concept would have changed the trajectory of my life for the better and I would have achieved many more things than I set to do and at a much earlier age.
